State Bar of Texas Assists Law Enforcement With Investigation Into Unauthorized Possession of Agency Information

After an extensive investigation by the State Bar of Texas and the Texas Department of Public Safety, officers arrested a former temporary worker for the State Bar on a charge related to the unauthorized possession of personally identifying member information.

Jennifer Carolina Lebo, 38, of Elgin, was arrested on October 18, 2019, on a charge of fraudulent use or possession of identifying information.

In April 2019, the State Bar became aware that Lebo might have obtained information belonging to State Bar members during her temporary assignment between February and April 2019. The bar immediately reported the matter to the Department of Public Safety and employed an outside computer forensics expert to help determine the nature and scope of the incident.

Law enforcement officials determined Lebo removed sensitive information belonging to 12 State Bar members. In June 2019, State Bar officials provided notice to each of the affected attorneys and provided them access to free identity protection services. The State Bar continues to assist DPS officers with a full investigation of the incident.

The State Bar had strict security measures in place at the time of the incident but has further tightened access and implemented additional safeguards to protect the information in its care.TBJ
