Supervised Practice Cards

In May 2020, the Supreme Court of Texas adopted new Rules Governing the Supervised Practice of Law by Qualified Law Students and Qualified Unlicensed Law School Graduates in Texas. These rules apply to any qualified law students, including LL.M candidates, qualified unlicensed law school graduates, and law students enrolled in a law school clinical legal education program, who request eligibility to engage in the limited practice of law under the supervision of a licensed Texas attorney.

All Supervised Practice Card applicants and supervising attorneys will be required to certify that they have read and agree to be bound by the Rules Governing the Supervised Practice of Law by Qualified Law Students and Qualified Unlicensed Law School Graduates in Texas.

Qualified Law Students and Qualified Unlicensed Law School Graduates

Law students and law school graduates can apply for a Supervised Practice Card by completing the following steps:

1. Read and become familiar with the following documents:

2. Download the appropriate Supervised Practice Card Application

3. Work with your law school dean and supervising attorney(s) to complete application.

Each application will include the following items:

  • Law Student or Law School Graduate Supervised Practice Card Application

  • Law Student or Law School Graduate Certification

  • Dean’s Certification

  • Supervising Attorney’s Certification for each Supervising Attorney

  • $15 Credit Card Authorization Form

4. Submit the completed Supervised Practice Card Application to:

Clinical Legal Education Program

Law school administrators may submit an application for all law students enrolled in a clinical legal education program by completing the following steps:

1. Have all law students enrolled in the clinical legal education program and all supervising attorneys read and become familiar with the following documents:

2. Download the Clinical Legal Education Program Application

3. Work with the law students, the dean, and the supervising attorneys to complete the Supervised Practice Card Application for Clinical Legal Education Programs.

The application will include:

  • Clinical Legal Education Program Dean’s Certification

  • Student Certification for all Students in the Clinical Legal Education Program

  • Supervising Attorney’s Certification for all Supervising Attorneys

  • Payment of $15 for each Law Student in the Clinical Legal Education Program

4. Submit the completed Supervised Practice Card Application to:
