Houston to host 2022 State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting
AUSTIN—The 2022 State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting will take place June 9-10 at the Marriott Marquis Houston.
Featured speakers include:

Chris Shepherd, a James Beard award winner who has helped change the landscape of the Houston culinary scene for the past 10 years, will headline the Bar Leaders Recognition Luncheon at noon on June 9. Shepherd’s foundation Southern Smoke has distributed more than $9.7 million to people in need in the food and beverage industry.

Corban Addison, a best-selling author, attorney, and activist, will keynote the Bench Bar Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. on June 10. Addison wrote the best-sellers A Walk Across the Sun, The Garden of Burning Sand, The Tears of Dark Water (winner of the inaugural Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize), and A Harvest of Thorns, all of which focus on some of today’s most pressing human rights issues. He will speak on his upcoming book Wastelands.

Simon Tam, an author, musician, and activist, will be featured at the General Session Luncheon at noon on June 10. Tam, the founder and bassist of The Slants, won a landmark case (Matal v. Tam) at the U.S. Supreme Court in 2017. His memoir, Slanted: How an Asian American Troublemaker Took on the Supreme Court, was named “One of the Best Books on the Constitution of All Time” by BookAuthority and won an award for Best Autobiography/Memoir from the Independent Publisher Book Awards. The 2022 Open Government Seminar (free and open to the public) will feature a legislative update on trends in open government law and a panel discussion titled “Courtroom Transparency—How the COVID-19 Pandemic Altered Court Accessibility and What Transparency Looks Like in a Post-COVID World.” The Open Government Seminar runs from 9 to 11 a.m. on June 10.

Laura Gibson of Houston will be sworn in as the 2022-2023 president of the State Bar of Texas at noon on June 10 during the General Session Luncheon.
