State Bar of Texas to hold 2020 elections electronically, extend voting deadline
AUSTIN — The Supreme Court of Texas issued an emergency order March 22 ordering the State Bar of Texas president-elect and board of directors election to be conducted exclusively by electronic vote because of uncertainty regarding the feasibility of handling paper ballots during the COVID-19 pandemic. The order also applies to the election of the Texas Young Lawyers Association president-elect and directors.
The order extends the deadline to vote to 5 p.m. May 29. The election was previously scheduled to run from April 1 to April 30. The State Bar will mail and email notices to attorneys giving them instructions on how to vote online starting April 1. Assistance will be available for those who need help voting online.
Candidates Pablo Almaguer of Edinburg and Sylvia Borunda Firth of El Paso are vying for State Bar president-elect. The individual elected will serve as State Bar of Texas president from June 2021 to May 2022. For more information about the candidates and election process, go to texasbar.com/elections.
