State Bar expands Texas Opportunity & Justice Incubator

AUSTIN — The State Bar of Texas is opening its Texas Opportunity & Justice Incubator (TOJI) to attorneys across the state via online learning beginning in January 2020.

TOJI helps solo attorneys build sustainable practices serving low- to moderate-income clients, thereby working to bridge the justice gap between those who qualify for free legal aid services and those who can afford to hire an attorney. Since 2017, 20 lawyers have graduated from the Austin-based TOJI program that includes business, technology, and marketing education designed to strengthen the lawyers’ practices.

Now, lawyers from across the state can apply and join the program via online learning while choosing where to practice based on personal or professional networks and community legal needs.

“Lawyers across Texas want to make a difference in their communities, and now TOJI can help them develop their practices from wherever they are, in their lives and their careers,” said TOJI Director Anne-Marie Rábago. “Experience has taught us the importance of linking these lawyers with like-minded professionals focused on bridging the justice gap.”

Lawyers interested in applying for the January 2020 TOJI cohort may do so online via the program’s website — txoji.com. The application deadline is October 21, 2019.

Besides the new virtual-learning format, other changes are taking place within TOJI. The incubator is shifting to a 12-month program (down from 18 months) and will graduate one cohort per year. Program leaders are also opening TOJI to attorneys of all experience levels. Previously TOJI enrollment was limited to attorneys within their first five years of practice.
