Houston to host 2018 State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting
AUSTIN — The 2018 State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting will take place June 21 and 22 at the Marriott Marquis Houston.
Featured speakers include:
Joseph Crespino, the Jimmy Carter Professor of American History at Emory University, will speak at the Bar Leaders Recognition Luncheon on June 21. Crespino is a historian of the American South since Reconstruction. He has written three books, including his most recent, Atticus Finch: The Biography—Harper Lee, Her Father, and the Making of an American Icon. (Noon-1:30 p.m. June 21)
Jim McIngvale, the Houston businessman and philanthropist known and beloved as “Mattress Mack,” will speak at the Bench Bar Breakfast on June 22. McIngvale famously opened two of his Gallery Furniture stores to use as shelters for people displaced by Hurricane Harvey. (7:30-8:45 a.m. June 22)
Douglas Brinkley, professor of history at Rice University, will speak at the General Session Luncheon on June 22. Brinkley is a bestselling author, a Grammy Award-winning producer, and a presidential historian for CNN. Eight of his books have been selected as New York Times Notable Books of the Year. His most recent book, JFK: A Vision of America, features the president’s greatest speeches as well as reflections from leading historians, statesmen, and public figures. (Noon-1:30 p.m. June 22)

The 2018 Open Government Seminar (free and open to the public) will feature panel discussions on Social Media and Government Accountability in The Age of Fake News and Emerging Issues in Open Government — A Media Perspective (9-11 a.m. June 22)
Joe K. Longley of Austin will be sworn in as 2018-2019 president of the State Bar of Texas, and outgoing President G. Thomas Vick Jr. of Weatherford will celebrate his successful year. (Noon-1:30 p.m. June 22)
Laura Gibson of Houston will be sworn in as 2018-2019 chair of the State Bar of Texas Board of Directors at a board meeting on June 21.
Randy Sorrels of Houston will be sworn in as 2018-2019 State Bar president-elect at that same board meeting on June 21.
