TLAP director recognized for work on lawyer well-being


Bree BuchananAUSTIN — Bree Buchanan, executive director of the Texas Lawyers’ Assistance Program, was granted the 2018 Excellence in Community Leadership Award by the Legal Professionals Program at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation in Center City, Minnesota.

Buchanan, J.D., is co-chair of the National Task Force on Lawyer Well-Being and co-author of the task force’s report The Path to Lawyer Well-Being: Practical Recommendations for Positive Change. She also chairs the American Bar Association Commission on Lawyers Assistance Programs.

Buchanan received the award at the annual Legal Professionals Recovery Retreat at Hazelden’s Dan Anderson Renewal Center in Center City, Minnesota. 

“There is no one more deserving of this award, which recognizes extraordinary service on behalf of lawyers struggling with substance use and mental health disorders, than Bree Buchanan,” said Kevin Chandler, director of the Legal Professionals Program. “Her tireless, selfless work is clearly changing the trajectory when it comes to wellness in the legal profession.”

State Bar of Texas Executive Director Trey Apffel congratulated Buchanan on the award. “Texas lawyers benefit immensely from Bree Buchanan’s passion and commitment to the health and well-being of all lawyers,” Apffel said.
