State Bar of Texas to honor Denton educator and bar association
 at Annual Meeting

AUSTIN — The State Bar of Texas will honor exceptional service to the public and the legal profession during its Annual Meeting on June 22 and 23 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas.

The following Denton individual and association are among those being honored:

Mark Felts, a graduate assistant and teaching fellow in the Department of Teacher Education and Administration at the University of North Texas, will receive the Honorary Leon Jaworski Award for Teaching Excellence from the State Bar of Texas Law-Related Education Department. Felts is on track to complete his doctoral studies in the spring of 2018. He first began using the State Bar’s Law-Related Education program when he was a high school teacher. When he came to the university, he brought his commitment to the program to his courses for future educators. His belief in setting a future teacher on a course to develop the ability to teach law-related concepts and civic responsibility to students has established a sound partnership with Law-Related Education and the University of North Texas.

Denton County Bar Association will receive an Outstanding Partnership Award for its Adoption Day project. The State Bar of Texas Local Bar Services Committee will present the award. The Denton County Bar Association has cultivated a strong partnership with Court Appointed Special Advocates, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, the Social Work program at the University of North Texas, Texas Woman’s University, the Child Abuse Prevention Society, volunteer judges and attorneys, and the community to organize Denton County Adoption Day for the past eight years. At the event, which takes place each fall in conjunction with National Adoption Day, volunteer attorneys prepare and finalize paperwork for families, students assist with decorating, and local businesses help fund the initiative and provide gifts. In 2016, 20 children found their forever homes at the celebration, with four district judges facilitating the adoptions.
