Dallas to host State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting

AUSTIN — The 2017 State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting will take place June 22 and 23 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas.

Featured speakers include:

  • Chief Judge Carl E. Stewart of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit will speak at the Bar Leaders Recognition Luncheon on June 22. Stewart, the first African-American to serve as the Fifth Circuit’s chief judge, was appointed to the court in 1994 by President Bill Clinton. (Noon-1:30 p.m. June 22, Chantilly Ballroom)

  • Bryan A. Garner, editor in chief of Black’s Law Dictionary and the author of many other works on law and language, will speak at the Bench Bar Breakfast on June 23. (7:30-8:45 a.m. June 23, Chantilly Ballroom)

  • Joseph Jaworski, a former Bracewell senior partner who now advises executives at Fortune 500 companies on organizational change and leadership, will speak at the General Session Luncheon on June 23. (Noon-1:30 p.m. June 23, Chantilly Ballroom)

  • Brian Cuban, a Dallas attorney, author, and recovery advocate, will be the keynote speaker of the Adaptable Lawyer Track. (9-10 a.m. June 22, Cortez Room)

Other special events include:

  • The 2017 Open Government Seminar (free and open to the public) will feature panel discussions on Legislative Trends in Open Government and Corporate Privacy vs. Government Transparency: Texas after Boeing v. Paxton (9-11 a.m. June 23, Wedgwood Ballroom)

  • G. Thomas Vick Jr. of Weatherford will be sworn in as 2017-2018 president of the State Bar of Texas, and outgoing President Frank Stevenson of Dallas will celebrate his successful year. (Noon-1:30 p.m. June 23, Chantilly Ballroom)

  • Rehan Alimohammad of Sugar Land will be sworn in as 2017-2018 chair of the State Bar of Texas Board of Directors at a board meeting on June 22. Alimohammad is the first person of Asian descent and the first immigration lawyer to hold the position.

  • Joe K. Longley of Austin will be sworn in as 2017-2018 State Bar president-elect at that same board meeting on June 22.
