State Bar of Texas to honor Dallas individuals and organizations at Annual Meeting

AUSTIN — The State Bar of Texas will honor exceptional service to the public and the legal profession during its Annual Meeting on June 16-17 at the Fort Worth Convention Center and Omni Hotel.

The following Dallas-area individuals and organizations are among those being honored:

  • Dallas Bar Association, Star of Achievement Award for “And Justice for All: Week of Pro Bono Service,” presented by the State Bar of Texas Local Bar Services Committee

  • Dallas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, Outstanding Partnership Award, presented by the State Bar of Texas Local Bar Services Committee. The award recognizes the DCDLA for organizing a continuing legal education cruise with North Texas Families in Transition, a professional group of family law attorneys, judges and mental health practitioners

  • South Asian Bar Association of Dallas/Fort Worth, Affiliate of the Year, presented by the State Bar of Texas Asian Pacific Interest Section

  • Chief Justice Carolyn Wright and John G. Browning, Certificates of Merit, presented by the State Bar of Texas. Certificates of Merit are presented to Texas lawyers who have made a great contribution to the legal profession and the State Bar of Texas, especially during the last bar year. Chief Justice Wright, of the 5th District Court of Appeals, and Browning are being honored for their informative and critical writings about an overlooked but important part of Texas legal history—the story of the first African-American lawyers in Texas. Their research has not only solved a historical mystery—who was Texas’s first black lawyer?—but has also contributed to our knowledge of the legal profession and a better understanding of the burdens faced by those early legal pioneers on whose shoulders later generations would stand. Browning and Chief Justice Wright not only shared their findings in informative articles for lawyers throughout Texas, but have also shared their knowledge through engaging presentations to the Dallas Bar, minority bar groups like the J.L. Turner Legal Association and the Houston Lawyers Association, law schools like Thurgood Marshall Law School and SMU Dedman School of Law, and the Texas African-American Lawyers Summit.

  • John G. Browning, Lola Wright Foundation Award, presented by Texas Bar Foundation. The award is presented in recognition for outstanding public service in advancing and enhancing legal ethics in Texas.
