State Bar of Texas honors law firm at Annual Meeting

AUSTIN — Presentations of awards honoring exceptional service to the public and the legal profession were a highlight of the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting, held June 18-19, 2015, at the Grand Hyatt and Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio.

The following organization was among those honored:

  • Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, W. Frank Newton Award, presented by the State Bar of Texas Legal Services to the Poor in Civil Matters Committee. The award recognizes the pro bono efforts of attorney groups whose members made an outstanding contribution toward increasing access to legal services for the poor. Akin Gump formed the Karnes City Immigrant Family Pro Bono Project with representatives from the University of Texas Law School Immigration Clinic, the Tahirih Justice Center in Houston, the American Immigration Lawyers Association in Austin, and Human Rights First in Houston to provide legal representation for detained mothers and children seeking asylum in the U.S. and release on bond before the immigration courts in San Antonio. Volunteer attorneys represented more than 100 women and their children through the project.
