State Bar of Texas to honor Tyler attorney, Smith County Bar Association at Annual Meeting

AUSTIN — Presentations of awards honoring exceptional service to the public and the legal profession will be a highlight of the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting, to be held June 26-27 at the Hilton Austin and Austin Convention Center. The following Tyler individuals and organizations are among those being honored:

  • Tracy H. Crawford, Ronald D. Secrest Outstanding Trial Lawyer Award, presented by the Texas Bar Foundation
  • Smith County Bar Association, Award of Merit, which honors exceptional work accomplished by local bar associations in areas of member service, community service, access to justice, law student/young lawyer outreach, communications, and social activities. The association gives members access to approximately nine hours of applicable continuing legal education (CLE) topics through its monthly luncheons, along with two full days of CLE seminars. Member benefits for newly licensed attorneys include a free year of membership, a mentoring program, and an annual new lawyer luncheon welcoming new members to the community. The association plays an active role in the community by hosting a tour of the federal courthouse for eighth-grade students and the Goldilocks Mock Trial for fourth-grade students. The bar also presented the State Bar of Texas civics education program “I was the first. Vote for Me!” to more than 1,200 elementary school students. Another community effort is the Smith County Law Library, which provides free resources and trained staff to self-represented litigants. To ensure access to justice, the Smith County Bar Foundation recruited more than 100 members to volunteer for pro bono cases, managed more than 30 active cases per month, and closed more than 65 cases during the 2013-2014 bar year.
