Bob Black of Beaumont to be Sworn In as State Bar of Texas President
SAN ANTONIO – Bob Black of Beaumont will be sworn in as president of the State Bar of Texas by Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Wallace B. Jefferson at a special ceremony at noon, Friday, June 24, at the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio.
Black is managing shareholder of MehaffyWeber, where he practices mediation, arbitration, and civil litigation. He has served as chair of the State Bar Board of Directors, Policy Manual Subcommittee, Facilities and Equipment Subcommittee, co-chair of the Nominations and Elections Subcommittee, and vice chair of the Executive Committee. The Board previously honored Black with a Certificate of Merit for his leadership and outstanding contributions to the legal profession. He also received a Presidential Citation in 2006 for outstanding service.
Black is a past president of the Jefferson County Bar Association. He is a frequent speaker on negotiation and mediation and a member of the State Bar Alternative Dispute Resolution and Litigation Sections. He has mediated more than 3,200 cases. Black served as a trustee of the Texas Bar Foundation, on its Executive Committee, and chaired its Grant Review Committee for two years. He is a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation and the American Bar Foundation. He is a former president of the Humane Society of Southeast Texas.
Black earned a J.D. summa cum laude from Texas Tech University School of Law in 1980, where he was an editor of the Texas Tech Law Review. He was recently honored as the Distinguished Alumnus of Texas Tech University School of Law for 2011. He will serve as president of the State Bar of Texas until June 2012.
The State Bar of Texas is an administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Texas. The Bar provides educational programs for the legal profession and the public, administers the minimum continuing legal education program for attorneys, and manages the attorney discipline system.
