Lubbock Individuals Honored by State Bar of Texas

DALLAS – Presentation of awards honoring exceptional service to the public and the legal profession will be a highlight of the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting, to be held June 25-26 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas.

The following Lubbock individuals are among those being honored: John Crews, Frank J. Scurlock Award, presented by the State Bar of Texas Legal Services to the Poor in Civil Matters Committee. Crews has donated over 400 hours of free legal services to the poor through the Equal Justice Volunteer Program at Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas (LANWT). In 1992, Crews became one of the founders of free evening legal clinics at St. John's United Methodist Church in Lubbock with the then West Texas Legal Services (now LANWT), which he and his firm have continued to sponsor. He is a recipient of the "Lubbock County Legal Clinic Volunteer Attorney Award" and the "Pro Bono Attorney of the Year" award, which was later renamed after him.

Wendy Humphrey, Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) President's Award of Merit for championing TYLA's State Moot Court and National Trial Competitions. As a professor at Texas Tech University School of Law, Humphrey's guidance and mentoring is of tremendous value in building the students' advocacy skills.

Jobe Rodgers, Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) President's Award of Merit, for his leadership role in developing and implementing "Healing the Wounds: Navigating the Legal System after Surviving Domestic Violence." Rodgers presented the video at the National Conference on Crimes Against Women and in Lubbock locations, earning him a Victims' Voice Award from the Lubbock County District Attorney.

The State Bar of Texas is an administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Texas that provides educational programs for the legal profession and the public, administers the minimum continuing legal education program for attorneys, and manages the attorney discipline system.
