South Texas Individuals and Organizations Honored by State Bar of Texas

DALLAS – Presentation of awards honoring exceptional service to the public and the legal profession will be a highlight of the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting, to be held June 25-26 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas.

The following South Texas individuals and organizations are among those being honored:

Cameron County Bar Association, Award of Merit, Best Overall Newsletter, Best Feature Story, and Best Series of Articles for local bar associations of its size.

Hidalgo County Bar Association, Star of Achievement for its Community Justice Program Divorce and Wills Clinics, Holiday Food and Toy Drives, and Best Human Interest Story among like-sized bar associations.

Roger W. Hughes of Harlingen, Certificate of Merit presented by the State Bar of Texas Board of Directors and past presidents for outstanding contributions to the legal profession. Hughes has served as a former president of the Cameron County Bar Association, on the State Bar Rules Committee, on the newsletter editorial board of the State Bar Litigation Section, and assisted with more than a dozen cases through pro bono divorce clinics to assist low-income people. Judge Migdalia Lopez of Brownsville, Ma'at Justice Award, presented by the Women and the Law Section to recognize and celebrate attorneys who have contributed to the furtherance of justice in our society.

Rebecca Vela of McAllen, Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) President's Award of Merit. Vela is honored for her work on the State Moot Court Competition, a three-day event held in Houston that involved seven Texas law schools. She also served as co-editor of the TYLA eNews.

The State Bar of Texas is an administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Texas that provides educational programs for the legal profession and the public, administers the minimum continuing legal education program for attorneys, and manages the attorney discipline system.
