Legal Services to the Poor in Criminal Matters Committee
Created in 1994Purpose
To study the system of defense of indigent persons in criminal law matters in Texas, collect data and other information relevant to their defense, and to develop recommendations for action by the State Bar of Texas and all related entities that are or should be involved in the provision of quality representation to indigent persons involved in criminal matters. Meets quarterly.
2025-2026 Projects and Objectives:

Indigence and Community Service: Using mental health treatment, drug counseling and job skills training as community service. Working with community service providers in your court as part of community service.

Evaluate and take action on Legal Desert - particularly in criminal defense.

Attorney Wellness

Public education campaign on the importance of counsel on criminal cases (especially misdemeanors) highlighting collateral consequences.

Language access to courts and attorneys.

Continue work on prosecutor guidelines to address input from prosecutor representatives.
