Houston Area Individuals and Organizations Honored by State Bar of Texas
HOUSTON — Presentation of awards honoring exceptional service to the public and the legal profession will be a highlight of the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting, June 14–15, at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.
The following Houston area individuals will be honored:
Tim Belton of Bellaire, a Presidential Citation for his efforts as chair of the SOLUTIONS Task Force and his concern that Texans have access to our courts and our legal system throughout challenging times in their lives, regardless of their income levels.
Alistair Dawson, a Presidential Citation for his hard work and inspiration in producing an exceptional annual meeting.
Bill Kroger, a Presidential Citation and Certificate of Merit for his vision in identifying and preserving important historical court documents and your energy and enthusiasm in ensuring that preservation continues.
Travis J. Sales, a Presidential Citation for his hard work and inspiration in producing an exceptional annual meeting.
Jefferson County Bar Association, a Presidential Citation for its encouragement and support and the outstanding service that the association provides to the public and the profession.
Mickey Baden, J. Chrys Dougherty Legal Services Award, presented by the State Bar of Legal Services to the Poor in Civil Matters Committee. Baden has been instrumental in the success of the Houston Bar Foundation Veterans Legal Initiative (VLI). Since he started working with VLI, Baden has increased the number of veterans served at each Friday afternoon clinic, while at the same time increasing the quality of services received by the veterans and the quality of the volunteer attorneys’ experience. He has represented more than 65 veterans or their spouses who were facing emergency issues.
Lana Burns of Hockley, Leon Jaworski Award for Teaching Excellence. The award is presented by the State Bar of Texas Board of Directors to recognize educators who have made an outstanding contribution to law-focused education and whose programs foster understanding of the values of our legal and judicial systems. Burns teaches at Cypress Ranch High School, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD.
Jefferson County Bar Association, Star of Achievement and Outstanding Partnership Award for its Veterans Initiative, as well as an Award of Merit.
Houston Bar Association, Star of Achievement for its Veterans Coalition and Outstanding Partnership Award for “A Family Day of Service.”
Fred Hagans, Lola Wright Foundation Award, presented by the Texas Bar Foundation.
Kelly Frels, Dan Rugeley Price Memorial Award, presented by the Texas Bar Foundation. This award honors an attorney who serves the profession as a volunteer and legal scholar while also actively practicing law and who exhibits dedication to service to the public and to the Bar.
E. William “Bill” Barnett, Harry M. Reasoner, and Hon. Ewing Werlein, Jr., Outstanding 50-Year Lawyer Award, presented by the Texas Bar Foundation. This award recognizes attorneys whose practice spans 50 years or more and who adheres to the highest principles and traditions of the legal profession and service to the public.
Lydia Clay Jackson of Conroe, Outstanding Achievement Award, presented by the African-American Lawyers Section.
Lionel M. Schooler, Justice Frank G. Evans Award, presented by the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section.
Gary McGowan, Distinguished Counselor Award, presented by the Antitrust & Business Litigation Section.
Gordon Quan, Justice David Wellington Chew Award, presented by the Asian Pacific Interest Section.
J. Thomas “Tom” Black, Pro Bono Service Award, presented by the Bankruptcy Law Section.
Jared Grodin, South Texas College of Law; Haley Reynolds, Thurgood Marshall Law School; Laura Fernandez, Thurgood Marshall Law School; Jennifer Smith, University of Houston Law School; Alessandra Allen, University of Houston Law School; and Alese L. Bagdol, University of Houston Law School, Buck J. Wynne Scholarship Recipients, presented by the Environmental & Natural Resources Law Section.
Hon. Berta A. Mejia, Reynaldo G. Garza Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by the Hispanic Issues Section.
Lale Korkmaz and Priya Prasad, Women & Minority Scholarship, presented by the Intellectual Property Law Section.
Connie Moore, Judge Norman W. Black Award, presented by the LGBT Section.
Charles W. Hall, Texas Tax Legend Award, presented by the Taxation Section.
Anne Chandler, Ma’at Justice Award, presented by the Women and the Law Section.
