Research and Analysis

Our Purpose
The Department of Research & Analysis provides research for all State Bar departments, committees, and the Board of Directors. The department's activities include conducting statistical surveys of the Bar membership, as well as studies of issues affecting the legal profession, such as economic and demographic trends. The department maintains extensive files of journal and newspaper articles and other publications on issues of importance to the State Bar and the legal profession in general, and utilizes these to answer queries from the membership and the public.

Comprehensive and highly detailed reports are available to State Bar Members, the press, and the general public. Department staff responds to hundreds of informational requests annually on a variety of topics. In most cases, this information is provided to State Bar members at no charge.

Economic Studies
The department has tracked economic trends in the legal profession since 1987. In collaboration with other departments of the Bar, including Law Office Management and Texas Bar CLE, Research and Analysis staff have conducted periodic surveys of Texas attorneys on a variety of topics including billing methods, hourly rates, hours worked, and income. Four reports from the most recent survey conducted in February of 2006 is available in Adobe Acrobat: Private Practitioner 2005 Income ReportHourly Rates in 2005 ReportCorporate/In-House Counsel 2005 Income Report, and Government Attorney 2005 Income Report.

Other Information from Research and Analysis
The Department produces other research materials on a wide variety of topics. Information is currently available on Texas law school enrollment, pro bono reporting statistics, and gender bias in the profession. A study of trust and confidence in the courts and the legal profession resulted in reports on the public's view and the insider's perspective. These and other reports can be found organized by year of publication here. In addition, the department staff responds to information requests on topics ranging from salaries of governmental and corporate attorneys to quality of life issues in the profession.
