This year’s retreat will provide excellent training and networking opportunities for anyone responsible for coordinating pro bono efforts for a legal services program or a law firm. Discussion will be focused on how to effectively deliver legal services to low-income Texans through the use of pro bono attorneys.

The retreat will be held at the Texas Law Center in Austin.

The theme of this year’s retreat is Partners for Justice. The retreat will explore coordination between legal services, law firms and private practitioners to most effectively serve low-income Texans.  Panel topics will include:

  1. Making the Case for Pro Bono in the Current Economic Climate

  2. Placement of Deferred Associates into Legal Services Programs

  3. Effective Mentorship

  4. Ethics panel - navigating conflicts of interest between legal services and pro bono counsel

Registration

Registration for the Pro Bono Coordinators Retreat is free. Texas Lawyers Care can reimburse reasonable travel and hotel expenses for one participant per pro bono/legal services program branch office to attend the Pro Bono Coordinators Retreat if the person is from a program that is either:
a. a recipient of Texas Access to Justice Foundation (TAJF) funds; or
b. a Texas recipient of Legal Services Corporation (LSC) funds; or
c. a Texas non-profit that provides civil legal services where at least 50% of the services provided are free to Texans whose income is 175% or less of federal poverty guidelines.

Early Registration Deadline: August 19th. Retreat materials are not guaranteed for on-site registrants or persons registering after August 19, 2009.

* Book early! A limited number of rooms have been blocked at the Doubletree Club Hotel Austin - University Area at special rates until end of business August 19, 2009, or until the room block is full.
The DoubleTree Hotel - Austin University Area is located at 1617 IH 35N in Austin. This hotel is located near the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. (MLK) and I-35 N, adjacent to Denny's restaurant. This is the same hotel where participants stayed last year. Participants are responsible for making their own hotel reservations.

Transportation

Attendees are strongly encouraged to carpool from the hotel to the Texas Law Center by meeting in the hotel lobby at 8:15 am on both mornings.

Parking

Due to limited parking at the Texas Law Center, parking for the Pro Bono Coordinators Retreat will be across the street in State Parking LOT 8, located on the NW corner of 15th and Colorado. Every vehicle parking in LOT 8 must display the temporary parking permit. Failure to do so may result in a ticket issued by DPS. Please park your vehicle directly into the parking space, do not back into it. Should you forget or lose your temporary parking permit, extra copies will be available at the Retreat registration table for you to pick up and take back to your vehicle.
