TLAP Volunteers
TLAP’s success in reaching the impaired attorney
is, of course, not possible without the dedication and commitment of the
TLAP volunteers and the participation of members of various lawyer support
groups, which continue to thrive and hold meetings in cities across the
state. TLAP volunteers
give their time, energy, empathy, hope, and compassion to reach out to lawyers
in need. TLAP supports its volunteers by providing training individually
throughout the year and during the Texas Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers Convention
held every year in early June.

Want to Volunteer with TLAP?
Are you a lawyer, judge or law student who
has:
-
Personal recovery from alcohol and drug use, or
-
Personal recovery from depression or other mood disorders,
or
-
Training, education and/or experience with substance
use disorders or mental health issues, suicide
prevention or survivor issues, or crisis counseling and debriefing?
-
A sincere interest in helping other lawyers, judges
or law students?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, we invite
you to join our team of volunteers.
Why volunteer?
In addition to drug and alcohol dependency, depression
and other mental health issues are more prevalent than ever among lawyers.
Imagine how much easier your own
road to recovery could have been if a lawyer of the same gender, practice experience and similar personal struggles as your own
had reached out to you. Or,
maybe you had a friend who was able to share his/her own experience and
listened to yours and served as evidence that there was a light at the end
of the tunnel. Why
not pay something forward or give something back? There
is no greater gift than to be the voice of hope
for someone else.
TLAP volunteers are dedicated men and women who are willing
to be peer support for lawyers, judges or law
students in crisis from alcohol or drug use or mental health issues such as clinical depression and bi-polar,
anxiety and panic disorders. As a TLAP volunteer,
you may be asked to share your personal experience,
strength and hope with another who is challenged by these same issues that
you once faced. You may also be helpful in a
variety of other ways to act as peer support
for another lawyer and help in getting him/her to professional resources available in your local community.
