Houston Attorney Gibson Gayle, Jr. to be Honored During ABA Meeting in Boston

(Austin) – Attorney Gibson Gayle, Jr. of Houston will be honored Feb. 16 by the State Bar of Texas during the American Bar Association (ABA) Mid-Year Meeting in Boston.

Gayle, a Life Member of the ABA House of Delegates, will be honored for 50 years of distinguished service. Secretary of the ABA from 1963 to 1967, Gayle has served as president and director of the American Bar Endowment, a member of the ABA Journal Board of Editors, and as a Life Fellow and member of the American Bar Foundation Board of Directors. In 2006 he was honored by the American Bar Foundation Fellows with an Outstanding Service Award.

Gayle served as president of the State Junior Bar of Texas in 1954-55, and four years later was elected chairman of the Junior Bar Conference of the American Bar Association. He was honored as the State Junior Bar’s Outstanding Young Lawyer in 1964. He served on the State Bar of Texas Board of Directors from 1966-69, as vice president in 1974, and as president of the State Bar of Texas in 1976-77. He is a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation and served as its chairman from 1968-69.

Gayle graduated with honors from Baylor Law School and was admitted to the Bar in 1950 after receiving the highest score on the Bar exam. He became a partner in Fulbright & Jaworski in 1961, served as the firm’s managing partner and chairman of the executive committee from 1979 to 1992, and has continued as of counsel to the firm.

He has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston Law Center and the University of Texas School of Law. In addition to Gayle’s service to the legal profession, he has served on the boards of the Baylor College of Medicine, the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Texas Medical Center, Inc., Harris County Center for the Retarded, and Houston Chamber of Commerce.

The State Bar of Texas is an administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Texas that provides educational programs for the legal profession and the public, administers the minimum continuing legal education program for attorneys, and manages the attorney discipline system.
