Texas Bar Foundation
Mission Statement
The Texas Bar Foundation solicits charitable contributions
and provides funding to enhance the rule of law and the system of justice
in Texas, especially for programs that relate to the administration of justice;
ethics in the legal profession; legal assistance for the needy; the encouragement
of legal research, publications and forums; and the education of the public.

In the mid '60's, the legal community in Texas recognized a critical need
for an organization dedicated to advancing the justice system for all. The
result was the Texas Bar Foundation, a philanthropic organization distinguished
by both legal excellence and a fundamental mission to serve.
For the past four decades,
the Texas Bar Foundation has demonstrated a profound commitment to
improving the justice system in Texas. As part of this commitment, the Foundation
literally reinvests in communities across the state to improve advocacy
efforts and provide capital equipment to meet future legal assistance needs.
The
past forty years have brought important milestones. Since our inception in 1965, the Texas Bar Foundation has distributed
more than $9 million in grants. With assets of over $20 million, and contributions
from more than 8,000 Texas attorneys to date, we are the largest
charitably-funded bar foundation in the country, and we continue our historical
efforts every year. In the fiscal year 2007alone, 48 grants totaling
$773,000 were awarded.
Additionally,
in 2004 the State Bar began funding the Student Loan Repayment Program
through the Foundation. The program was initiated to encourage and
enable recent law school graduates to work for Texas legal aid organizations,
and to assist legal aid programs in retaining experienced lawyers.
To date, 75 legal aid attorneys in 28 communities across
the state have received assistance with student loans, for a total
of $530,000. We at the Texas Bar Foundation are proud to manage
this program for the State Bar of Texas.
With
escalating costs and increasing budget constraints, today’s economic
environment is a challenge. Yet, because of your generous assistance, the
Texas Bar Foundation was able to support community efforts that included
direct legal services, youth advocacy and education programs, mentoring
projects, major equipment purchase and much more.
More
importantly, because of your commitment, legal barriers have been removed
for the needy. Doors have been opened for the underserved. And legal educational
programs have enlightened citizens throughout the state of Texas.
We are deeply
appreciative for your generosity and continuing support. By being careful
stewards and with the support of the legal community of Texas,
we ensure that the work of the Texas Bar Foundation will continue well into
the future.
Sincerely,
The Texas Bar Foundation
