Frequently Asked Questions About Committees

Who are the chairs and members of each committee?
Committees are comprised of attorneys, judges and public members.   Each committee's members and terms of service can be viewed here or at www.texasbar.com/committees

How can I apply to be a member of a committee?
Applications are accepted throughout the year via the Committee Interest Form link here or at  www.texasbar.com/committees.  To be considered for the following bar year (Annual Meeting through Annual Meeting), please submit your interest prior to December 4.

How long is a member’s term?
Typically, a regular Member position is a three year term.  Chair and Vice Chair positions are a one year term.  Advisory Member positions are a one year term.  If you are a member and are unsure of your term end, view the Committee Membership roster or contact the Committees Coordinator for detailed information.

How can I update my information online with the State Bar of Texas?
Updates to employer, address, phone, fax, and email can be made at MyBarPage at www.texasbar.com.  If you are unable to access this page, choose Membership Department in the Quick Links sections of our homepage.  There, forms can be found to make these updates.

Where can I obtain a Reimbursement Request Form for the committee meeting I recently attended?  To whom should I send it?
The State Bar reimburses reasonable meeting travel expenses.  You may download a Reimbursement Request and view Reimbursement Guidelines by clicking on the document names.  Mail your request with original receipts to either your committee staff liaison or to the Committees Department at: P.O. Box 12487 Austin, TX 78711-2487 within 45 days of the meeting.

I would like to know more about a committee, but I do not see the committee listed on this website.
This Committees page describes Special and Standing Committees of the State Bar, as part of the State Bar’s Board Policy.  Many other committees exist through the Board of Directors, Chief Disciplinary Counsel, Sections, Local Bars, and other state agencies.  If you cannot locate a committee, the Committees Coordinator may be able to help you.

What types of projects are the committees working on?
Each committee’s purpose is different.  In order to achieve their specific goals, committees suggest rule revisions, recognize outstanding attorneys and public members, promote diversity in the profession, develop policy initiatives, educate attorneys and the public, publish books videos, and other ongoing projects.  For specific committee projects, view the Annual Objectives Report or Year End Report at www.texasbar.com/committees

How long can a member serve?
According to Board Policy, a member can serve up to two consecutive three year terms.
