State Bar Honors Three Area Lawyers for Exemplary Community Service
AUSTIN – (April 11, 2005)
The State Bar of Texas honored three Austin lawyers Friday for making a
difference in our community.
“Texas lawyers are behind
the scenes, doing great things to make a positive impact on local communities,”
said State Bar President Kelly Frels, a senior partner at Bracewell &
Giuliani in Houston. “Our communities and the lives of countless individuals
are undeniably better due to the efforts of Malcolm N. Greenstein, Eric
Montgomery Shepperd and Judge Harriet Mitchell Murphy.”
Malcolm N. Greenstein and Eric
Montgomery Shepperd were recognized for being the driving forces behind
the effort to establish a commemorative plaque recognizing Sweatt v.
Painter, a lawsuit that changed the way Texas and the country dealt
with race and education. The Heman Sweatt case was instrumental in the eventual
desegregation of the University of Texas School of Law. Greenstein and Shepperd
organized a committee to raise funds for the Sweatt memorial and petitioned
the Travis County Commissioners Court to place the plaque outside the Travis
County Courthouse.
Judge Harriet Mitchell Murphy was
honored for bringing distinction to the legal profession and honor to Texas
through more than 35 years of service as an attorney and judge. Among her
accomplishments, Murphy was the first African-American woman to be appointed
to a regular judgeship in Texas, she was instrumental in helping to found
the Austin Black Lawyers Association, and she is active in many community
activities.
The three lawyers were presented
with honorary resolutions in conjunction with the State Bar of Texas quarterly
Board of Directors meeting.
