STATE BAR OF TEXAS - JOB VACANCY NOTICE

 

JOB NUMBER:  10-010-1910          CLOSING DATE: October 30, 2009 - 1:00 p.m. CST
STARTING SALARY RANGE: $32,788-$36-886 annually, plus excellent benefits
POSITION TITLE: Assistant Editor
DEPARTMENT:  Texas Bar Journal

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Writes articles and edits information for the Texas Bar Journal, the monthly magazine of the State Bar of Texas. Works as a part of the Communications Division on a variety of communications projects. Assists the managing editor with day-to-day operations. Manages administrative workflow to ensure that the office works efficiently and effectively. Helps create and implement processes to assist Communications Division teams. Provides customer service to State Bar members, the public, vendors, and staff. 

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

  1. Writes feature and news articles; copyedits staff-written and submitted articles. Works with Texas Bar Journal editors to find story ideas. Stays abreast of current developments within the legal community in Texas.
  2. Coordinates and collects information for several monthly columns and departments.
  3. Assists with magazine layout and correcting copy using Macintosh operating system.
  4. Writes, edits, and produces content for a range of State Bar publications, including brochures, annual reports, newsletters, e-newsletters, press releases, and online content.
  5. Monitors purchases, billing, and record keeping to ensure that office is well maintained and that payments and bills move through appropriate State Bar processes.
  6. Maintains calendar for department, assists with setting up meetings, and ensures mail-outs and packets are timely and correct.
  7. Manages front office, including overseeing inventory control and deliveries and assisting with Printing and Graphics operations. Maintains necessary records in accordance with records management plan.
  8. Handles subscriptions and general correspondence; answers phone; sorts and distributes mail.
  9. Assists with printing/mailing/postage issues as they arise and maintains compliance records for Periodical Postage as well as copyright information.
  10. Performs other responsibilities as required.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree required. Must be proficient in desktop publishing using a Macintosh operation system (Microsoft Word and QuarkXpress). Two years of journalism or other publication experience preferred. Proficiency with digital camera preferred. Must be excellent proofreader. Must be able to understand a subject, conduct interviews, work well with volunteers, and write clear, concise articles. Requires the ability to work well under pressure, work on several projects simultaneously, and produce work that is neat and accurate. Occasional travel required.
