| "The ladders sway, they
give in the middle, and the crevasses are up to 50 feet deep." |
|
| Repeatedly carrying a 40-pound backpack up the 10 flights of stairs of
his office building was only part of Stuart Smith’s regimen as he
prepared to climb Mount Everest. In the months leading up to his departure,
Smith, an attorney in the Waco office of Naman, Howell, Smith & Lee,
P.C., completed three marathons. In the preceding years, he ascended the
highest peaks in North America, South America, and Africa. Full

| "Our project (Texas C-BAR) has a long-term
impact on communities. I can drive down the street and see the houses, and
see the families that we have helped. It's extremely rewarding." |
|
| | I cannot imagine doing any other
type of law," says Heather Way, the director of Texas Community
Building with Attorney Resources (Texas C-BAR). Way created Texas C-BAR
in June 2000 as a statewide, transactional pro bono project to deliver free
legal services to nonprofit community development corporations working to
revitalize low-income communities. In its first two years, Texas C-BAR has
linked nearly 100 nonprofits with attorneys, and recruited more than 25
law firms to accept pro bono referrals. Full

| Her diet, for a champion runner, is surprising: a dozen cans of A&W
root beer a day, unlimited candy, and no vegetables. “I’m the
cookie monster of the office,” says Lori Stich Zimmerman
(left), an associate with the Austin firm of Fleckman & McGlynn, P.L.L.C.
In February, at the Austin Motorola Marathon, Stich Zimmerman qualified
for the Olympic Trials, finishing the 26.2-mile course in two hours, 42
minutes, and 59 seconds. She also finished first in the points standings
for the Clear Cube Distance Challenge, a series of races leading up to the
marathon. Full

| "I played a prosecutor
and that's when it started."
|
| In the fifth grade, Judge Barbara Parker Hervey was the star of the school
play, but instead of being bitten by the acting bug, it made her want to
soar with the legal eagles. "I played a prosecutor and that’s when
it started," said Judge Hervey, 49, of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.
"It was a cute little play that involvedpunctuation, so we were prosecuting
people that had bad grammar and bad punctuation. It was kind of fun." Full

"Maybe I’m just immature
for my age — but I hope I stay that way."
| | Broussard, 48, a former partner
in Hughes and Luce, L.L.P. and former shareholder in Locke Liddell Sapp,
L.L.P., became a sole practitioner eight years ago. His practice consists
of traditional contract law, less traditional business issues, and some
very unusual jobs, like representing a company that makes navigator lights
for yachts and shooting the photos for its ads. |
