Emeritus Attorney Program
The Emeritus Attorney Program is available to retired and inactive Texas attorneys and attorneys licensed in another
state but residing in Texas. Under this program, the attorney may be certified
to practice law as a volunteer with an approved pro bono organization under
the supervision of a staff attorney. To qualify for emeritus attorney certification,
an attorney must:
- be in good standing with the state licensing authority with which the
attorney is licensed (or from which retired);
- have been engaged in the active practice of law for at least five (5)
out of the immediately preceding ten (10) years prior to application for
Emeritus Attorney status; and
- be a volunteer with a pro bono organization that has been approved under
the program.
Texas Lawyers Care, the pro bono/legal services support department of
the State Bar of Texas, will assist with the application process for all
attorneys and pro bono organizations seeking Emeritus Attorney certification.
For more information about this program, contact Texas Lawyers Care or call 800-204-2222, ext. 1855.
