Legal Assistants

For legal assistants, membership in a professional organization is not mandatory. However, becoming a member of the Legal Assistants Division of the State Bar of Texas has many benefits.

Criteria for Division Membership
You should apply for active membership in the State Bar of Texas Legal Assistants Division if you are currently employed as a legal assistant and are performing substantive legal work 80 percent of the time. Details about membership criteria are available on the Legal Assistants Division website.

Specialization as a Legal Assistant
Legal Assistants may be eligible for certification by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in the areas of civil trial law, criminal law, estate planning and probate law, family law, personal injury trial law, or real estate law. For information on certification standards, please click here.
