Buck Files is a shareholder in Bain, Files, Jarrett, Bain & Harrison, P.C. in Tyler. He earned a B.A. (1960) from Austin College, where he sits on the Board of Trustees, and an M.L.A. (1974) and a J.D. (1963) from Southern Methodist University.

He is certified in criminal law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization (1975) and in criminal trial advocacy by the National Board of Trial Advocacy (1997). He is a charter member and former director of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and was inducted into TCDLA’s Hall of Fame (2011). He was named Defense Lawyer of the Year by the Criminal Justice Section of the State Bar (2004). He served on the State Bar’s Board of Directors and received the Outstanding Third Year Director Award and a Presidential Citation (2007). He has served on the Texas Board of Legal Specialization (2007-2011) and the Criminal Law Advisory Commission (Chair 2001–2004), the District 2 Grievance Committee, and the Continuing Legal Education Committee (Chair 2008–2011).

He served as a course director for the Advanced Criminal Law Course (1997) and has been an author/speaker at 23 of these courses. He is a member of the College of the State Bar and is a sustaining life fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation. He received the Smith County Bar Association’s Justinian Award (2008). He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, attaining the rank of captain. He and his wife Robyn celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this fall. They have two children, Jennifer and Trey, and two granddaughters, Romy and Lucy.
