Texas Young Lawyers Association to Present Voting Rights Documentary and Voter Registration Drive to Akins High School Seniors in Austin
(AUSTIN) – In an ongoing quest to educate young people across Texas about their fundamental right to vote and the history of the suffrage movements that solidified that right, the Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) is presenting "Vote America! Honor the Fight, Exercise Your Right" Video Presentation and Voter Registration Drive:
Tuesday, Oct. 2, 1:19 – 2:44 p.m.
Akins High School, Academy of Business, Leadership and Legal
Enterprises, Library
10701 South First St., Austin
Deputy Voter Registrars will be on site to facilitate voter registration.
Hosted by former "Rock the Vote" President Jehmu Greene, and produced by TYLA, "Vote America!" gives viewers an opportunity to witness heroic efforts of the past and encourages understanding of our necessary role in defending democracy today. The documentary chronicles the struggles incurred during the African-American and Women's Suffrage movements, the plight of language minorities in their quest to have an equal voice in democracy, and the role that young people played to secure our most precious right. "Vote America!" is the second documentary on civil rights produced by TYLA, the first being the Emmy-award winning "They Had a Dream Too: Young Leaders of the Civil Rights Movement."
All licensed Texas lawyers who are 36 years old or younger or who are in their first five years of licensure, regardless of age, are automatically members of TYLA. Commonly referred to as the "public service arm" of the State Bar of Texas, TYLA's main purposes are to facilitate the administration of justice, foster respect for the law, and advance the role of the legal profession in serving the public.
