Financial Assistance

Often, lawyers who come to TLAP have depleted both personal and financial resources, a circumstance which presents considerable challenges to beginning treatment. The following are sources of possible financial support for Texas lawyers in crisis:

The Sheeran-Crowley Memorial Trust

These funds are for the benefit of Texas attorneys and their families to assist attorneys impaired by substance dependence or other mental disorders in paying for treatment or otherwise achieving recovery from their disorder. The Trust is administered by the Texas Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers, Inc., a non-profit and sister organization to TLAP.

To be eligible to receive funds, an attorney must: be a Texas resident, a law school graduate and have applied for a Texas law license or already have a license the status of which is active, suspended, or revoked. Funds are made available only when other resources are not available. Recipients are asked to make a moral commitment to repay the grant, so other attorneys who suffer can be helped.

The Mack Kidd Fund

The Justice Mack Kidd Fund provides financial support for counseling and medical treatment on a short-term basis for lawyers in the Austin area whose practices have, as a result of depression or a related illness, declined to a point that they cannot afford to pay for treatment themselves.

The Houston Bar Foundation

The Houston Bar Foundation provides limited temporary financial assistance through to attorneys who qualify and are approved by the Foundation's Board of Directors as being in need of financial assistance.
