State Bar of Texas to honor Houston individuals, organizations at Annual Meeting

AUSTIN — Presentations of awards honoring exceptional service to the public and the legal profession will be a highlight of the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting, to be held June 26-27 at the Hilton Austin and Austin Convention Center.

The following Houston individuals and organizations are among those being honored:

  • David A. Chaumette, Trailblazer Award, presented by the State Bar of Texas African American Law Section
  • Timothy Crooks, Gregory S. Coleman Outstanding Appellate Lawyer Award, presented by the Texas Bar Foundation
  • Mark Frenkel, Richard Alderman Award for CLE Excellence, presented by the State Bar of Texas Consumer and Commercial Law Section
  • Chief Justice Kem Thompson Frost, 14th Court of Appeals, Judge Merrill Hartman Pro Bono Judge Award, honoring a judge, sitting or retired, who has provided exemplary pro bono service.
  • L. Henry Gissel Jr., Distinguished Texas Probate Attorney Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by the State Bar of Texas Real Estate, Probate and Trust Law Section
  • Warren W. Harris, Gene Cavin Award, presented to a person who has made substantial contributions to the State Bar continuing legal education program.
  • Angelica M. Hernandez, Certificate of Merit. A council member of the State Bar of Texas Hispanic Issues Section, Hernandez helped create a successful continuing legal education program, raise more than $5,000 in sponsorships, and unify the various Hispanic bar associations and law schools with the Hispanic Issues Section.
  • Houston Bar Association, Star of Achievement Award, for its Constitution Day programs; and Outstanding Partnership Award, for working with the Greater Houston Area Special Olympics on a number of events.
  • Houston Volunteer Lawyers (a service of the Houston Bar Association), Pro Bono Award, honoring a volunteer attorney organization that has made an outstanding contribution toward guaranteeing access to the legal system by the poor. In 2013, Houston Volunteer Lawyers provided in-person, one-on-one legal advice at no charge to approximately 4,000 applicants, including more than 1,900 U.S. veterans or spouses of deceased veterans.
  • Stephen K. Huber, Justice Frank G. Evans Award, presented by the State Bar of Texas Alternative Dispute Resolution Section
  • Andrea Johnson, Barbara Culver Award, presented by the State Bar of Texas Women and the Law Section
  • Leif Olson, President’s Award of Merit, presented by the Texas Young Lawyers Association
  • Alex B. Roberts, Outstanding First Year Director, presented by the Texas Yong Lawyers Association
  • Robin Russell, Louise B. Raggio Award, presented by the State Bar of Texas Women and the Law Section
  • Victor R. Scarano, M.D., J.D., Outstanding Law Review Article Award, presented by the Texas Bar Foundation
  • Jay Stubbs, Leon Jaworski Award for Teaching Excellence, presented to educators who have made an outstanding contribution to law-focused education and whose programs foster understanding of the values of our legal and judicial systems. Stubbs has been a legendary force among debate programs and builds a passion within students for law-focused education through his debate teams.
  • Travis Torrence, John C. Akard Community Service Award, presented by the State Bar of Texas Bankruptcy Law Section
  • Wendy Trachte-Huber, Justice Frank G. Evans Award, presented by the State Bar of Texas Alternative Dispute Resolution Section
