State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting Attracts Top Speakers to Houston
(Austin) – The State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting will take place June 26-27 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. Speakers will include:
Karen Hughes, former White House counselor and U.S. Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs.
Jeffrey Toobin, senior legal analyst for CNN and staff writer at The New Yorker.
Houston Mayor Bill White, Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, and San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger, who will participate in a panel discussion on "The Future of Texas Cities" to be moderated by Melanie Lawson.
A debate on immigration will include panelists David Martin of the University of Virginia School of Law,Cecilia Munoz of the National Council of La Raza,and Mark Krikorian of the Center for Immigration Studies. ESPN Legal Analyst Roger Cossack will moderate.
Two panel discussions intended for journalists as well as lawyers include experts that reporters covering Houston area legal news are likely to recognize:
"Open Courts: Gag Orders, Sealed Records and Open Courtrooms" – Judge Susan Criss, Scott Durfee, Mary Flood and Bill Ogden. Paul Watler will moderate.
"The Public Side of Private Arbitrations" – Texas Supreme Court Justice Nathan Hecht, Judge Craig Smith, Mark Watler and Rob Wiley. Former Texas Supreme Court Justice Craig Enoch will moderate.

How Television Impacts Jurors
Harper Estes of Midland will be sworn in as State Bar president, assuming the leadership role from Gib Walton of Vinson & Elkins LLP in Houston. Bill Miller of Texarkana will pass along the presidency of the Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) to Sylvia Cardona of San Antonio.
Awards acknowledging excellence in service to the public and to the profession will also be presented.
