Edinburg Community Justice Program Wins State Bar of Texas Pro Bono Award

(Austin) – Presentation of awards honoring exceptional service to the public and the legal profession will be a highlight of the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting, June 26-27, at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.

The Community Justice Program (CJP) of Edinburg will be presented with the 2008 Pro Bono Award. The CJP is a joint project of the Hidalgo County Bar Foundation and Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, established to provide free legal services to low-income residents of Hidalgo County. With the volunteer assistance of local bar members, the Hidalgo County CJP has held monthly divorce clinics since 2006, with an average of 10-15 cases filed at each clinic. The State Bar of Texas Legal Services to the Poor in Civil Matters Committee honors the work of the Community Justice Program for its outstanding contribution toward guaranteeing access to the legal system by the poor.

The success of the CJP earned the program a grant from the Texas Bar Foundation, which was used to provide a portable office at the Hidalgo County Courthouse for volunteer attorneys working on pro bono cases.

The Texas Bar Foundation has awarded more than $9 million in grants to law-related programs since its inception in 1965. Supported by members of the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Bar Foundation is the nation's largest charitably-funded bar foundation.

The State Bar of Texas is an administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Texas that provides educational programs for the legal profession and the public, administers the minimum continuing legal education program for attorneys, and manages the attorney discipline system.
