Emeritus Attorney Program

You could be certified to practice law as a volunteer under the Emeritus Attorney Program if you are:

  • retired, inactive, or working outside the legal profession — but with time to donate
  • at home with your children — but still want to keep your legal skills sharp
  • licensed in another state — but residing in Texas and want to donate your time

Get certified under our program and provide pro bono services under the supervision of a staff attorney.

To qualify for Emeritus Attorney status, an attorney must:

  • be in good standing with the state licensing authority with which the attorney is licensed or from which the attorney has retired
  • have been engaged in the active practice of law for at least five (5) out of the immediately preceding ten (10) years prior to application for Emeritus Attorney status
  • volunteer with a pro bono organization that has been approved under the program.

The personal rewards of providing access to justice are substantial.

Attorneys can apply law they already know, learn new areas of the law, and keep their legal skills sharp. Additionally, organized programs offer:

  • free MCLE opportunities
  • experienced mentors
  • practice experience with schedule flexibility
  • malpractice insurance
